Samuel
Butler (1835 – 1902) was a British author and scholar.
He translated the Homeric epics into English, and he espoused a
Lamarkian theory of evolution in a prolonged literary debate with
Charles Darwin. In addition to his literary works Butler produced
paintings and musical compositions.
