Arthur Charles Clarke has lived in Colombo, Sri Lanka since 1956. In 1945 he published the technical paper “Extra-Terrestrial Relays” which first proposed communication with satellites in geostationary orbit — a speculation realized 25 years later. Today the geostationary orbit at 42,000 kilometers is named “the Clarke Orbit” by the International Astronomical Union. With Heinlein and Asimov, Clarke is considered one of the fathers of modern science fiction.
